This is the story of Iftikar(Judge Shyamlal) who lives with his wife and only son Arvind(Rajesh Khanna). Arvind is studying law and is on his way to become a lawyer and then a judge like his father. Arvind meets Asha(Vidya Sinha) studying in the same college and falls in love with her. Both plan to get married. But Asha's father who is a renowned astrologer, predicts that the future is dark if they both get married. So the couple stays together without getting married. Arvind's parents requests him to get married to another girl but he goes against his parents wish and stays with Asha. Asha becomes pregnant and soon they start making plans for the new addition in the family. Arvind on the other hand, meets Neelam(Shabana Azmi) his boss's daughter who falls in love with Arvind, considering him as a bachelor. Meanwhile Asha's father passes away and she leaves for her home to Darjeeling without informing Arvind. Arvind tries to search her, but in vain. Arvind gets married to Neelam. Asha takes shelter in Swami's (Om Shiv Puri) aashram. Arvind informs Neelam about his past life and they both meet with an accident. Shabana dies in the accident and Arvind is hospitalised. He is operated upon and after that Arvind gets married to Asha and they live happily after.
