Karthik Calling Karthik rating: 7 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 26 Feb 2010)

Hollywood film making has been influencing many newcomer directors in our country from a long time, but then there are very few who manage to make a film under that influence and keeping in mind the audience of our country. Last year we saw Wake up Sid which was a perfect example of it. Following it we have now Karthik Calling Karthik which has an Experimental actor Farhan Akhtar, who’s Luck By Chance was a good effort in such type of cinema. Let’s find out what more does this flick offer.

“Karthik Calling Karthik” is story of Karthik Narayan {Farhan Akhtar} who is a reserved type nerd working in a Builder’s {Ram Kapoor} firm. He is bossed by almost everyone in the office. He has soft corner for the Architect Shonali {Deepika Padukone} who does not even notice him after working in the firm for so many years. One day Karthik after doing loads of work gets firing from his boss, he goes to a Shrink {Shefali Chaya} who motivates him to speak for himself. In that process Karthik is fired by his boss. Karthik sulks down and in depression stays inside his home for days. Then one day he gets a call in 5 a.m in the morning, and that call is from Karthik {Himself}. The caller Karthik motivates the listener Karthik and changes his life. Karthik starts enjoying the new life which is full of confidence, success and filled with love. But as every good thing are short lived, Karthiks new life also changes to hell and things goes beyond control. What happens next is to be watched and not read.

Story is quite unusual and interesting. Though some parts are inspired by Hollywood flicks, but rest all are fantastic. Screenplay is soo tight and gripping and you are totally engrossed in the film. Some scenes have superb writing like Farhan-Ram Kapoor Scene, Farhan on Coffee date, Doctor Waiting for Call, Farhan and Deepika’s intimate moments, etc. The movie has some good witty dialogs which impress you a lot. Thanks to the makers who have kept the movie theme and story so much in secret that you don’t know what’s there inside the movie. Editing is superb, and you don’t get a single moment which is not interesting. Camera work is superb and all the angles, locations are as apt as per the requirement of the movie. Looking at the way the movie has been shot, you do feel the international touch in it.

Music is sweet and soothing. Hey Ya keeps you rocking and Uff Teri Ada is enjoyable. Background music is perfect as per the mood of the film.

Debutant director Vijay Lalwani manages to impress you with in this movie. His way of storytelling is so enjoyable that you don’t want the suspense to end and want the thriller and romantic part to just go on and on. There are some great scenes which are highlight point of the movie. The movie is technically so slick, that you don’t understand when the movie gets over. Its total fast and pacy, though some might not be happy with the climax justification, but for me it works well. I will surely wait for this director’s next flick.

Farhan Akhtar has a different style of acting and doing films which are more of experimental type of films. Farhan suits in the character so well that you don’t miss any other actor in it. Ya he is bit of repetitive in some scenes. Deepika Looks hot and cute and does her part very well. She is perfect as per her role and one does not take their eyes from her when she is on the screen. She has grown a lot in her performances than her debut film. Shefali Chaya, Ram Kapoor and few others are fine in the small role.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hai dum ?

Dum hain, Kaafi dum hain. Total gripping story, Sweet music, Excellent performances and great direction makes this movie Un-Miss able for sure. Climax might be bit not up to the mark for some, but as per me was perfect. I know you might be feeling what is this movie all about, Romance, Thriller, Comedy, Drama, etc. well I would suggest don’t think much and pls listen to your heart and take a call of watching this film, and if you don’t then you gonna regret missing this call for sure.
