The Good Newzzzz and the Bad Newzzzzz
Good Newzzzz: Karz is getting remade and that too with permissions and blessings. Subhash Ghai and Rishi Kapoor must be thanking their star that they made this film, way back in 1980. Last year it was Om Shanti Om (OSO) paying a trinute to Karz. Not only OSO started with the shooting of Karz, but also featured Ghai and Rishi in a special appearance. OSO was itself derived from the superhit song of Karz and Dard-e-dil became Dard-e-Disco. Dastaan-e-Om was Ek Hasina Thi revisited
Bad Newzzzz: The director had to be Satish Kaushik (nothing special in his track record) and Himesh Reshammiya taking places of Ghai and Rishi (and L-P, and Kishore & Rafi)
Good Newzzzz: Just like Don went to Malaysia, Karzzzz goes to South Africa and Kenya (though these bits look like being shot in and around Capetown). Cinematography & Editing is good, but not breath-taking
Bad Newzzzz: Script is stale. 80% of it is CTRL C, CTRL V. Like Don, they tried a twist, Monty tells Kamini, “Haan Kamini, main hiii Ravvvvvvvi Vvvvverma hooooon” (Himesh style). After that, they stick to the old script thus leading to ambiguity of the script.
Good Newzzzz: Urmila stages a comeback. Danny’s Kabira takes Bollywood old songs (like Anupam Kher in Khel) than Pran Saab’s Kabir’s dohe
Bad Newzzzz: The acting department sleepwalks. They also lose their sleep after watching Rishi-Simi-Tina-Pran for 333 times.
Good Newzzzz: Dino Morea looks stylish. In his cameo, this must have been the most-watched of any of his films after Raaz (Ya Raaz, I did not say Baaz).
Bad Newzzzz: Where-as Raj Kiran & Rishi Kapoor gelled somewhere, Dino and Himesh look like Kenya-India bhai bhai
Good Newzzzz: Himesh composes well, and a different sound track – not as melodious as his films for mentor Salman (PKTDK, MPKK, Tere Naam, Kyon Ki..), but still an experiment in fusion-rock-pop mix. Sunidhi and Shreya are in form in Tandoori Nights and Ek Hasina Thi. But what was the off-beat Ek Hasina Thi. Laxmi-ji would have had a heart attack if he were alive. Pyare-bhai gave Himesh his blessings. I think Himesh avoided playing that part of this track at the meeting
Bad Newzzzz: The Music of Karz became (and remained for a long long time) as the first Pop-based music to win a Filmfare Award for Laxmikant Pyarelal. Rafi’s Dard-e-dil, Kishore’s Om Shanti Om and Kishore-Asha Ek Hasina Thi are iconic numbers
Good Newzzz: Himesh –Urmila chemistry was theek thaak. Not chatpata as a Tandoori @Night, but better than the melting ice-cream chemistry between him and Shweta Kumar.
Bad Newzzzz: Wrong casting. Monty is born after a (minimum)18 year old Kamini kills Ravi. The current scene is 25 years later. So Kamini must be at least 43 years old. And Monty is 25. In actual life Himesh is around 40 and Urmila is close to 35. If Himesh was mandatory, I would have loved to see Rekha play Kamini. Or maybe Simi? And if Urmila was to play Kamini, why not Ranbir?
Good Newzzzz: The original Karz plays on Zee Cinema and is available on Shemaroo. Do catch the timeless classic as many times as you wish
Bad Newzzzz: In spite of all the hype and sho-sha, Karzzzz sinks. The producer, distributors, however, has already announced that it is a BIG HIT. Instead of an AAAA (ie A+++), the audience has given the film ZZZZ
