Katakuti is a very interesting film in recent times on relationships. The very word ‘relationship’ has been given a new meaning and dimension thanks to the way in which it has been explored. The film is a very humane tale right from the beginning showing the other side of some particular individuals like Dr.Sudeshna, a psychiatrist at a mental asylum .She is considered to be different from other doctors in dealing with patients and one particular patient Piklu, a young medical student who loses sanity after his childhood love dumps him, catches her attention. She even brings him home much to the disgust of her family members barring her sister-in-law.
On one side Sudeshna tries to improve Piklu’s condition and on the other side she has to deal with her husband’s infedility. Then you have characters like Pritha, her sister-in-law who is in a relationship with Subhro, a married man whose wife is aware of their relationship.Rupsha, Sudeshna’s daughter is extremely spoilt and she is raped by her so called friends one day and she is finished. The entire revolves around the two central characters Piklu and Sudeshna. It is as if the these two characters were created to make the world a more better place by bringing people together and ending any kind of discord between individuals and spreading love, peace and harmony. That includes being more considerate towards the mentally deranged as well. That is a very important message which is the USP of the film and it has gone down very well. In fact it seems as if the other characters were supposed to just fit in their place and play their roles. There is also another important character played by Manoj Mitra of that of a mentally deranged person who has become normal, but refuses to go anywhere as his remaining family members will disown him so he takes the role of a gardener at the asylum. What a character and what natural acting by Manoj Mitra!Even all the actors at the asylum playing mentally deranged characters like Dwijen Bandopadhay, Kharaj Mukherjee, Barun Chakrabarty are simply excellent.
The film shows Piklu who actually is able to bring all the people together and end all discord whether it is Subrata and Rupsha accepting him or Subhro’s wife accepting Pritha .It is his rational behaviour which stands out.
What stands out in this film is also the level of acting.Rahul is simply excellent as Piklu. He is by far the best actor among leading heroes in Tollywood. His facial expressions are just right for the role. Each of the other actors and actresses are very good.Jaya Seal has been seen on the big screen after a long time and as Sudeshna, she brings a sense of authority, consideration and compassion to the role. Yes her accent might seem a little out of place, but the fact in real life after staying in Mumbai, she has perhaps developed this accent and also in this film too she is playing the part of an Assamese married to a Bengali. The choice of actors has been perfect.Nachiketa, the music director plays a special role as a wandering ‘general conscience’ who would like to see people get united with their loved ones ending all discord and spread the message of love and live peacefully.
That is ‘the’ message of the film. Well done Premangshu for a first timer.
