"Katha" tries to explain the relevance of "the hare and the tortoise" tale(Aesop's fables). The only difference here is that times have changed and it is not the tortoise which always wins, this movie also challenges the tale in parts The hare here is Vashu(Farooque Sheikh), a happy-go-lucky, street-smart casanova, who would not mind telling any number of lies to get his job done. The tortoise here is Rajaram (Naseeruddin Shah), a simpleton, a caring neighbour, who doesn't miss any chance to help his fellow chawl-dwellers. The story gains an unexpected twist when Vashu starts flirting with three different women at the same time, the women in question being Sandhya Sabnis (Deepti Naval) herself, the wife of his boss. Vashu manages to convince Rajaram's boss to give him a job and even takes credits for Rajaram's work. In the process he also started cooking-up many stories about his education, parents and background. Rajaram gets utterly disappointed to find that the lady whom he has loved for long, Sandhya has fallen into the trap of Vashu but when it comes to marrying her, he flies away. It is only when things take an ugly turn that Sandhya is made to feel the love Rajaram has for her. She initially refuses to accept his marriage proposal thinking that he would be doing her a favour by accepting her but later-on, after learning that he truly loves her from the bottom of his heart, accepts it and they live happily ever after.
