    Madhavi(Asha Parekh) runs away from her wedding for her lover Kailaash(Prem Chopra),who is actually interested in her uncle's wealth . Soon Madhavi realises that she is being cheated when she finds Kailaash with another girl Shabnam(Bindu). Heart broken,Madhavi goes to meet her friend Poonam(Naaz), who is traveling with her infant son, and is headed to visit her in laws Mr.&Mrs. Dinanath (Nazir Hussain &Sulochana) at Nainital. Madhavi travels with them. But,as fate would have it,a train accident kills Poonam but her baby lives. A dying Poonam entrusts the child to Madhavi, who is a runaway. So Madhavi decides to take up Poonam's identity and pretends to be her at her.She begins to stay at Nainital with Mr and Mrs Dinanath. Here, she meets Kamal (Rajesh Khanna),, a young man that she falls in love with. She also discovers that Kamal is the man she was supposed to marry in the first place. Kamal who doesn't recognise her ,is angry about the treatment meted out to him by his wife to be. Kamal is attracted to Madhavi, and therefore expresses his desire to marry her despite her being a widow, before her in laws. At first, they are shocked but later relent. At this stage though, Madhavi's manipulative lover Kailaash and his girlfriend Shabnam resurface.They malign Madhavi, shock Mr Dinanath and kill him and try to frame her. But Madhavi manages to prove the truth with the help of Kamal, n they get married to live happily ever after...
