Born in the state of Gujrat in 1952, Ketan Mehta was described at the beginning of his film carer by the late critic Iqbal Masud as " the most talented represetative" of the new generation, and by others as the "wonder kid" of the off- Bollywood ( non-comercial ) genre. After studying economics, he became actively involved in theatre in Delhi, and then in Mumbai and his native city Ahmedabad. In 1975, he graduated from the FTTII direction course and started working for SITE (Satellite Instructinal Television) programme--launched in 1976. He then did a series of documentaries for Doordarshan on the theme of "Untouchability, which had an enormous impact on the public and raised the hackles of some members . His work until tiday includes -Gujrati, Hindi and English--the latter being the language used for most of his documentaries. The last category includes the iconoclastic film he made in 1977-78, on the condition of the "untochables" in Gujart entitled "Wat Tamari".
