Movie is based on friendship between Rehamat Khan (Shatrughan Sinha ) a Henchman and a havaldar Ramdin(Raj Kapoor). Khan was pronounced life imprisonment when he killed Ranga who insulted Khan's girlfriend Zarina bai, a dancer in a kotha. Ramdin, a havaldaar who works in the central prison is very sensitive and emotional. Khan takes advantage of this and plans scenes which pressurises Ramdin emotionally to let him go and Ramdin does so on Khan's promise, that he would return back. But Khan doesn't come back. As days passed Ramdin started feeling worried and started to search for Rehmat Khan. Ramdin first meets Zarina bai. Zarina bai was kidnapped by Saggi. She was saved by Ramdin. Also Ramdin cremated Rehmat Khan's mother. After his mother's death Rehmat Khan started feeling guilty. When Saggi attacked him again, Ramdin tried to save him. But in this attempt, Ramdin lost his eyes. Rehmat Khan was guilty for this and he wanted to help Ramdin. But Ramdin refused to take his money. He wanted money from Rehmat khan 's hard work. Rehmat khan started searching for a job but instead handed over himself to police for which he got 10000 Rupees and that money was used for Ramdin 's eye operation. This helped in growing Ramdin & Khan's friendship.
