Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey rating: 7 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 03 Dec 2010)

It’s been around Seven Decades we got our independence. The generations which have been born after the independence era does not even know what it was in those days. But then we did associate with the era through our history chapters, stories from grandparents, patriotic films and good amount of books. But what we know is just tip of the iceberg, as there were so many untold stories which we don’t know, but had equal and important role in the independence of our country. Ashutosh Gowarikar brings us one such unpopular story of unsung real heroes of that era in his latest film ‘Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se’. Let’s find out will it be preachy as our history lessons or will make our blood boil like our patriotic films or will make us feel that era like we use to when any of our grandparents told stories about them or someone they knew who took part in the independence fight. Let’s find out.

“Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se” is based on real incidents which happened in 1930 at a small place called ‘Chittagong’ a place in east Bengal. School Teacher Surjya Sen {Abhishek Bachchan} is a revolutionary who is fighting for independence of our country. He is supported by Nirmal Sen {Sikandar Kher}, Anant Singh, Ganesh Ghosh {Samrat Mukherjee}, Loknath bal, Ambika Chakraborty and others. One day plenty of teenagers come to meet Surjya sen to seek his support for getting back the land where they use to play football, which is not a base camp for the Britishers. Surjya Sen is planning to attack the Britishers in Chittagong and for that he needs volunteers and thus his team along with loads of teenagers and two young ladies Kalpana Datta {Deepika} & Pritilata Waddedar {Vishakha} plans the attack. What happens next is the entire movie about.

Story is based on real incidents and beautifully narrated in a cinematic way. Though at some point we did need some more information of the lead characters, on other side there was bit more information of other characters which was not needed. First half screenplay is based on how the group was formed and how did they prepare themselves. Scenes like the interview of the teenagers, Physical training of the teenagers, Fund raising, etc are superb. Sadly the pre interval portion drags a bit and a good amount of editing was required out there. But the moment second half starts the movie is total thriller which keeps you on your edge of the seat at most of the times. The whole britisher attack, the attack on freedom fighters on the hill top and many other scenes are outstanding. Again there are some unwanted scenes which could have been chopped out for keeping the flow of the film. Climax is nice and the end credits are outstanding. Camera work is nice.

Music has been a major plus point in Ashutosh’s film, but out here it fails to impress. Sohail Sen fails miserably; the only savior for him is the ‘Vande Matram’ track. Background music is good and keeps you in the mood of the film.

When Ashutosh made ‘Lagaan’ which was a based on fiction, but many people felt it was a real story. That’s the geniuses of the great film maker. After that his swades and Jodha Akbar were outstanding. But his last film was not at all up to the mark with his earlier films. But with KHJJS he is back on the track, only thing which is missing is there is very less scope for entertainment value in this film and for that only we give applause to Ashutosh for being so faithful with the story and real incidents. He is obsessed with long films and yes out here if the film was bit smaller it would have made a great impact. The best part of this film is there are no forced patriotic dialogs, or dramatic moments or great lyrical songs to give you Goosebumps. The film is total down to earth, the patriotism feel comes naturally on each and every character‘s face.

You need guts to play a role of Unsung Hero and that too from a historic chapter, Abhishek Bachchan scores full marks for just doing such film. Besides that, he is total different from all the patriotic leaders we have seen till date on Indian Screen. His body gestures, facial moments, the eyes expressions makes you respect him and his character. Deepika looks sweet and has done a decent job, but sadly her role is short. Sikander Kher is outstanding and this is best work till date. Samrat Mukherjee, Feroz Wahid Khan, Vishakha Singh, Shreyas Pandit and all other supporting cast has done a great job. Not to forget all the teenagers who have done a great work.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai dum ?

Dum hai bahut dum hai, second half to total dumdaar hain. The movie is superb and everyone who cares for our independence or history should definitely see this movie. There are so many scenes where you feel for each and every characters of the film. If only the music of this film would have been better and some trimming done over the length of the film, this movie had all the elements to become a masterpiece. As for people looking out for mindless fun, sorry please avoid this film, it’s not for people like you who don’t understand the word ‘Independence’.
