  • Khiladi Khichdi, anyone??

    Khiladi 786 rating: 5 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 07 Dec 2012)

    It was exactly two decades ago, in the year 1992, when a small film ‘Khiladi’ turned out to a sleeper hit with chart-topper music and promising newcomers, not only establishing Akshay Kumar as a bankable action star but started India’s biggest franchise series ‘The Khiladi Series’ with seven films under its franchise {Khiladi, Main Khiladi Tu Anadi, Sab Se Bada Khiladi, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, Mr & Mrs. Khiladi, International Khiladi & Khiladi 420}. The end of 90 also brought an end to the era of big-budgeted Masala films or Mindless action comedies as it shifted base to B-Grade films featuring Mithun Chakraborty followed by the Bhojpuri films era. But from last few years the trend of Masala films are back and that too with big stars, big budget production values and great amount of promotions taking them safely to the 100 Cr Club.
    Most of these films are Mindless entertainers where the sole purpose is to entertain its audience, but then there also co-exist such clones where they look similar on the content level and lack the entertainment quotient but enters the 100 Cr Club thanks to the star value, Promotions and foolish audience expecting another Entertainer in the name of these clones which at times are mere trash. So this explains the return of ‘Khiladi’ series with its new offering – ‘Khiladi 786’ with its key player Akshay Kumar who is riding high with loads of Super Hits this year like Housefull2, Rowdy Rathore & OMG {Minus the disaster – Joker}. So let’s find out whether this combination of ‘Khiladi’ series with rise of Masala entertainers along with good luck factor of Akshay Kumar work or as they say too much of everything turns out to be nothing.

    ‘Khiladi 786’ is the story of Mansukhlal {Himesh Reshammiya} who is a failed marriage-broker. He is approached by a local goon Tatya Tukaram Tendulkar alias TTT { Mithun Chakraborty} who wants to get her Sister Indu {Asin} married to a decent family. Mansukh finds her suitable groom in Punjab – 72 Singh {Akshay Kumar} who belongs to a family {Raj Babber, Mukesh Rishi, Etc} of goons who helps local police loot the smuggling booty. Mansukh introduces both families belonging to police from their states. What happens next is what the entire film about.

    Story is interesting and has perfect plot for an enjoyable no-brainer. But in films like 'Khiladi 786', along with the plot you need good amount of gags and 'moments'. Sadly, the gags here are not enough to entertain you throughout and screenplay goes for a toss after establishing the basic plot. Never-the-less, there are some enjoyable moments like the whole start fight in the dairy, Himesh meeting Mithun for first time, followed by his meet with Raj Babbar & his international family consisting of females from Africa, Canada & China, The whole Raj Babbar family meeting Mithun Family, Akshay Kumar – Rahul Singh tiff in jail, etc.
    On the flip side, the entire supporting cast overacts to the hilt, and there is a serious overdose of sub-plots {Gugi, Bharti, Mushtaq Khan, etc} , the speeding Car scene, Asin’s change of heart, and the whole finale. All these could’ve been entertained if only the writers had taken some efforts to indulge some good humor or dramatic moments. The second half has nothing to offer besides some great tracks. Action scenes are in lines of ‘Son Of Sardar’ and nowhere close to ‘Dabangg’ or ‘Rowdy Rathore’.

    Music by Himesh Reshammiya is total entertaining; almost all songs are foot-tapping. The best track of the film is ‘Balma’ which has become a huge rage with its Pancham-style. Next in line are ‘Lonely’ & ‘Long Drive’. ‘Sari Sari Raat’ should've been omitted however. ‘Khiladi Bhaiyaa’ is clearly a throw-back to the ‘Hud Hud Dabangg’ from Dabangg. ‘Hooka Bar’ is good song highly wasted in end credits.

    Debutant director Ashish R Mohan tries to make a film in a style mastered by his mentor Rohit Shetty, whom he assisted in ‘All The Best’. What he fails to understand is that even making a Masala Movie is a work of art. It cannot be done by everyone, you have to keep your audience entertaining and enjoying every bit of your film. In recent times, directors like Rohit Shetty, Prabhudeva, Sajid Khan and few others have got it right as rest are plain clones churning out flicks in the name of following the fad. He has a great plotline but lack of experience; bad writing and over confidence ruin this film.

    Akshay Kumar literally kicked into stardom with his action adventures, and tries to revive his 'Khiladi' franchise this time with his ‘Khiladi’ trade mark, failing only because the writer-director let him down. Although never as abysmal as 'Joker', this movie definitely falls short of Kumar's previous dhamaal entertainer this year- Rowdy Rathore'. Asin looks nice in this film, but hardly has any role to speak of. Mithun gives another good performance. This is my first Himesh Reshammiya film as an actor and while he does a fairly good job in few scenes, all his solo scenes are rather terrible. Sanjay Mishra, Raj Babbar and Mukesh Rishi do their part with ease. While I loved the track of Rahul Singh, Manoj Joshi & Mukesh Tiwari, it could’ve been much much better. Gugi, Bharti, Johnny Lever, Navin Prabhakar, Mushtaq Khan, etc were just there for namesake.

    So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ iss film mein kitna hai Dum ?
    The movie starts with total Dum with a promising story-line, Foot tapping music and some entertaining scenes but fails miserably on the entertainment level. Even a die-hard Masala Movie lover like yours truly finds it hard to enjoy himself, being forced to watch what is definitely an attempt to clone whatever seems to be the latest trend, the Masala Action potboilers.

    If you see the graph of The 'Khiladi' films – right from Khiladi to the last installment being that disastrous ‘Khiladi 420’. In some twisted way, 'Khiladi 786' at best can be called a 'Masala Khichdi' of all his Khiladi films {The Khiladi style in the action scene from ‘Khiladi’. Akshay in Cop uniform from ‘Main Khiladi Tu Anadi’, The groom angle from ‘Sab Se Bada Khiladi’, Punjabi flavor along with loud action from ‘Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi’, The humor part, African character from ‘Mr & Mrs. Khiladi’, Twinkle Khanna from ‘International Khiladi’ out here as a Producer and lack of strong entertainment from ‘Khiladi 420’}, settling out as an average fare.

    Ratings: 2.5 {Thanks to the plot line and foot tapping music}

    P.S - Its way better than 'Son Of Sardar', So 100Cr Club looks like you will have another member to add.
