This is the story of a lawyer/judge Hari Srivastav (Sanjeev Kumar) who is married to Seema (Tanuja) and has two brothers Govind / Chottu(Amitabh Bachchan) and Raja(Vinod Mehra). Bhabhi Tanuja is not in favor of the two siblings living off her husband's income. Unable to bear bhabhi's taunts, the two kids leave home. Chottu grows up to be a taxi driver and supports his brother Raja's education. Raja, however pays little attendtion to education and leads a careless life. He then marries his girlfriend, Manju (Bindiya Goswami) and lives in her father's house, which is a condition laid by her rich father. Raja's careless ways, creates tension between him and his father-in-law. The father-in-law is murdered by Bansi (Prem Chopra) for the money and Raja is framed for murder. Chottu takes on the murder charges and appears in the court of his elder brother. Chottu recognizes his elder brother. Later on, on finding out that Chottu and Raja are his own brothers, Hari decides to be their defense lawyer. He defends Chottu successfully and exposes Bansi, the real murderer.
