In the patriotic song, "Door Hato Ae Duniya Walon",a negative reference to Japan was used, "Tum na kisike aage jhukna, German ho ya Japani", which allowed it to pass through heavy British censorship.Though people understood the hidden meaning and it became an instant hit, amidst the atmosphere of rising nationalistic fervor. The Britishers realised their mistake soon, and wanted to ban the film. An arrest warrant was issued for the Kavi Pradeep, who had to go underground to avoid arrest.

Kismet was one of the biggest hits in Indian film history. It ran continuously for 196 weeks at Chitra, Calcutta. All were regular shows! The film went on to become a major success, at a theatre in Calcutta it ran for three years, and gave Indian cinema its first superstar, Ashok Kumar. Its net gross came to Rs.10 million in 1943, which in today's date is equivalent of Rs.632 million. This record was beaten 8 years later by Awaara in 1951.
