Major Ajit Arya (Nana Patekar) is assigned the task of finding out the whereabouts of Major Balbir Singh Sodhi (Amitabh Bachchan), who tried to assasinate Home minister Veer Bhadra Singh (Danny Denzongpa) but in vain. The Army identified Balbir Singh, but he escaped. Now, everyone is on a look-out for him as a Court-martial has been issued against him. Ajit kicks off this mission by changing his identity to a Bengali Journalist. He finds a local patriarch Dada Bhai, who shares a striking resemblance to Captain Balbir Singh. Dada Bhai also has a name-sake brother Monty (Mukul Dev). To investigate further, Ajit meets Dada bhai and pretends as if he wants to know all about him for a cover story for his news-paper. Dadabhai happily agrees. Meanwhile, Ajit meets a talented but corrupt Cop Kiran Patekar (Tabu) and they both fall for each other. on the other side however, Ajit realises that Dada bhai and Balbir Singh have no similar characteristics and has just made up his mind that they are two different people. Just then, Dada Bhai admits his true identity that he is only Captain Balbir Singh Sodhi. In this way, Ajit succeeds in completing his task. However, On their way to jail, Balbir explains his motive to Ajit behind his attempt to kill Home Minister Veer Bhadra. Ajit realises the truth and joins Balbir instead in his aim to fetch Veer Bhadra his just desserts. Meanwhile, terrorist Gafoor Changezi (Mukesh Rishi) declares that they wont allow any worshipper to enter Shirdi temple on the occasion of Navratri, to which Veer Bhadra openly declares he will go there, only in order to win over the public's faith. Now Ajit and Balbir's duty come between their way to expose the truth about Veer Bhadra. Will Ajit and Balbir succeed in their mission?
