Sanjay Mehra (Rakesh Roshan) is a scientist. He lives with his wife Sonia (Rekha) and is passionate about studying heavenly bodies through computers and telescopes. He believes that there is life beyond Earth. He continuously transmits the sound generated by the syllable "Om" and hopes that someone somewhere will hear this signal and respond to it. One day, he does get a response, and he hurries to share this with experts, only to be made fun of. He returns home and there is a supernatural phenomenon, with a UFO coming close to earth, this causes him to lose control of the car he is driving, and he has an accident in which he is killed and his pregnant wife, injured. Sonia thereafter, gives birth to a handicapped boy called Rohit. He grows up with mental diabilities. Nisha (Preity Zinta) enters his life and is compassionate towards Rohit.

Rohit's life changes when he is taunted and made fun of in school, especially when he claims that he is hiding an alien in his storage shed. Is Rohit making all this up with an overly active childish imagination (for who can believe a mentally challenged individual having hallucinations about aliens and spaceships?) or is he really hiding an extra-terrestrial?
