Krishna Chandra Dey was born on 26th August, 1893 in Kolkata. As he was born on the auspicious eve of Janmasthami , he was named Krishna. He suffered from Glaucoma from childhood and at the age of 12, he lost his eyesight. He had completed primary education from Bowbazar School.After he lost his eyesight, and discontinued his studies and started taking singing lessons under experts like Sashimohan De, Badal Khan, Keramutullah, Radharomon Das, Kanthe Maharaj, Dabir Khan.He was a radio artist and married actress Miss Light. Famous singers Manna De and Prabhas De are his nephews.
In 1932 , he got his first break in director Devaki Basu’s film “Chandidas” where he sang and acted at the same time. He sang the famous song “ Phire Chal apan Ghore” in this movie.His role as Sudam in “Krishnachandra” was also highly appreciated. He added another feather to his cap by composing music for different films. He first composed music for “Sabitri” in 1933. He had recorded innumerable Hindi-Urdu-Gujrati songs . He was even a regular stage artist. He was the founder of Rangmahal Theatre along with RabindraMohan Roy. Desher Mati(1938), Purabi(1948), Bhagwan Srikrishna Chaitanya(1953) are some of hi s films where he had shown his acting talents profoundly. This great cum singer-actor passed away on 28th November, 1962.
