Kunal Kohli studied at the prestigious Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai. He was an avid film buff and loved watching Hindi films. He hosted the show Chalo Cinema in the 1990s on El TV, a Zee group channel for several years before he made hi directorial debut with the TV series Trikon.
Kunal was noticed when he directed music videos like “Mera Laung Gawacha” and “Chui Mui Si Tum” by Aditya Chopra and he got his first break as a director with Mujhse Dosti Karoge(2002) under the Yash Raj Films banner. In spite of having a huge starcast of Hrithik Roshan, Rani Mukherjee and Kareena Kapoor, the movie got a lukewarm response at box-office.
The failure of Mujhse Dosti Karoge did not reduce Yash Raj Films’s confidence in Kunal and they gave him another chance with Hum Tum (2004) with Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherjee. Hum Tum was a big hit at the box-office and Saif Ali Khan won the Silver Lotus National Award for Best Actor for the film. The treatment of the film and the effective use of animation gave Kunal great recognition.
Kunal’s next film Fanaa(2006) starring Aamir Khan and Kajol, was amongst the top 5 grossers of the year. Kajol made a sensational comeback after her marriage and won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Kunal has also directed the immensely liked Tata Indicom ads starring Ajay Devgun and Kajol.
Kunal launched his own production house Kunal Kohli Productions and made the film Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic starring Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukherjee and Amisha Patel under his own banner. The movie was co-produced and presented by Yash Raj Films. The film however got lukewarm response.
Kunal Kohli’s Hum Tum won 5 Filmfare Award including the Best Director Award. He also won the Screen Award for Best Director for the same film.Kunal Kohli is married to Raveena Kohli for 15 years. Raveena has directed TV shows like Koffee With Karan.
