    Kurbani Rang Layegi ?

Post 9/11 many film makers in west and eastern counties have made films related to the theme either post event or prior to the event. But in India the wave had not caught up that big except for few films just portraying the event in minor scale. The blow to Indian film maker came in form of a Pakistani film “Khuda Kay Liye”, the success to this film started a trend of making films with this theme and forced association of Indian Muslims / Asian Muslims to this event or the aftereffects. This year we witnessed a masala inspiration of Khuda kay liye in form of New York and now we see another film with same theme coming from house of Entertainer Karan Johar. Let’s find out will this Kurbani of the Masala Film Maker be worthy enough ?

“Kurbaan” is story of Avantika {Karina Kapoor}, a visiting lecturer in Delhi University who meets another Lecturer Ehsaan {Saif Ali Khan} and both fall in love. Avantika basically work in New York University and gets the call back for her work, she is accompanied by Ehsaan who also joins the university. They move to a Indian neighborhood and get to know Bhaijaan {Om Puri}, Nasreen {Kiron Kher}, Salma {Nauheed Cyrusi} and few more. Trouble starts when Salma ask Avantika to help her as she fear her husband will kill her. Thus Avantika approaches a friend of Salma, Dia Mirza who works for a News Channel along with her college Ayaaz {Vivek Oberoi}. Sadly she has to leave that day along with a delegation for Iraq, so she promised to look in the matter once she is back. Avantika comes back to find out that Salma Is dead and Bhaijaan and others are planning an attack on the plane which Salma’s friend is boarding. She tries to warn but ends up leaving a voice message. Thus starts the tale of twist and turns leading to a unexpected climax.

Story is good and quite interesting. Though has huge reminding of New York, Fanaah and few more films. Screenplay is quite tight and gripping especially in the middle hour of the film. Sadly it loses out in the weak climax which could have been better and hard hitting. Though there are many loop holes and cinematic liberties taken but still has some good original stuff which works in favor of the film. Film needs some good editing especially in the last part of the film as such films need to be short and crisp; sadly this film is bit long and thus looses the favor till the climax part. The American bashing sounds good but misses the counter attack on the jihadi’s as there is no one to say so which leave the film with negative message and hardly any positive message in it. Camera work is superb and the way it’s been shot, scenes, etc makes the movie interesting and enjoyable.

Music is good and songs are used in background which also works in favor of the film. Shukran Allah, Ali Maula, Rasiya are well shot and used in the film. Title track is wasted in the end credits. Back ground music is nice.

Director Rensil D'Silva does a good debut with such theme. His way of storytelling is interesting and different. Wish the story had more freshness as the direction had. He has managed to get some good performances from the lead actors. Yes the hard hitting factor is but missing as one does expect this from the ace writer who gave us fantastic films in past. We also fail to understand the motive and message behind this film as what did the director wanted to show. If he wanted to show the pain of the terrorist he should had shown them more brutal or more tortured. If he wanted to show the love story between the lead pair he should had shown more romantic and emotional scenes between them. If he wanted to show good vs. evil story he needed to show more good points rather than just negative talking going all along and portraying a community in total negative manner. But despite all this negative markings the film has its own merits in form of technical values, music , performances and some good writing.

Saif does an impressive part, but sadly his character lacks the seriousness. Kareena Kapoor has given a good performance and has been properly utilized by the director. This movie will go in the list of her good performance films like Chameli, Jab We Met,etc. Vivek too has done a decent job and it’s proved that if he gets some decent film makers he can deliver lot more than press conferences. Om Puri is repetitive and unimpressive. Kiron Kher was quite different and it was good to see her in this role, breaking her monotones Punjabi Mom image. Rests all were ok.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hain dum ?

Dum hain kaafi dum hain, in fact New York se to kaafi better hain. But thanks to weak climax, one sided reasons, lack of seriousness makes the film an above average film. Maybe Karan Johar needs to attempt more hard hitting and has to sacrifice the glamour and masala little more, shayad tab yeh Kurbani rang layegi. Still not a bad watch, enjoy it for songs, good performances, gripping middle half and a decent debutant direction.
