"Aurat narak ka dwaar hai" (the woman is the door to hell), one of the statements by Rekha in the movie comes up with the plotline of LAJJA. lajja talks about the woman's liberty and their dignity in the context of indian society.
Lajja is the story of vaidehi (Manisha Koirala) who runs away from her husband in searh of her dignity. In the run she comes face to face with some of the brutal realities of our Indian society regarding women. She witnesses
1. A helpless father (Anjan Srivaastav) trying to cope up with the stress of her daughter (Mahima Chaudhary) getting married, combined with the unreasonable demands of the in-laws.
2. A pregnant stage actress (Madhuri Dikshit Nene) fighting with her lover's rejection and ultimately paying price for questioning the Woman's pride in the mythology, by the whole of society.
3. And an old lady, Ram Dulari (Rekha) getting raped by the village's supreme authority (Danny Denzogpa & Gulshan Grover) and then being burnt alive, a punishment she had to pay for raising her voice against the woman's unequality.
Lajja was inspired by a real life incidents of 1999, where an old lady was brutally raped and then burnt alive by the village's zamindars, a punishment she faced for making the women of that village liberal, and self-dependant. Rekha's character RAM DULARI was inspired by that lady.
it is one of the most Hard-hitting reality based cinemas that you wil come across face to face. RAJ KUMAR SANTOSHI did a terrific job by producing and directing such a movie. This movie also marked the beginning of the friendship of RAJ and AJAY DEVGAN, who played a vital role of PHULWA in the movie.
