My Rating

  • Lal Ronger Duniya rating: 4 out of 10(Aditya Chakrabarty wrote on 19 Sep 2008)

The film 'Lal Ranger Duniya' deals with the shady world and lives of sex workers and the other social ills which surround it. Others movies too have made before on this subject and this is no exception. The big bad world of prostitution, local mafia, politicians etc. could have been explored fully and more could have been shown about Himan trying to improve the lives of the sex workers or trying to eradicate other social ills. But unfortunately Dalia becomes the protagonist from the moment she is shown. The manner in which the film started, one would have thought that the story would be told through the eyes of Himan and he would be the protagonist. All the social ills which prevail in society like torture of sex workers by local goons, political patronage and corrupt NGO's are shown here. From the very beginning, Himan's character is not given enough footage and Dalia become the central character whose mission in life is to eliminate Shiva, the local goon who rapes and plunders at will, but no one dares to touch him since he enjoys political patronage. Since she was sent to jail by Shiva who had made a false allegation that she had made a minor or sex worker, she looks for a chance to get back at him and when he rapes and burns a sex worker to death, she can't take it any more ans hacks him to death. Some important angles like Sanghamitra's boss at the NGO who turns out to be involved in trafficking are explored beautifully, but some irrelevant thinks like character of Mehuli (Which has been stretched to much), the love angle between Sanghamitra and Himan could have been cut shot. Tathagata is OK in his debut film, but Rajesh Sharma as Shiva is excellent and Debasree Roy as Dalia proves with her performance why she is an actress par excellence. The film is full of profanity as it is full of abuses.
