Jatin Pandit and Lalit Pandit, the brother duo more popularly known as Jatin Lalit dominated the Bollywood music arena from 1992 to 2006 after which they parted ways on the premise of personal problems. However they have recently made music for Mr.White Mr.Black.
The two brothers are genetically inclined to music - they were born into the prestigious Mewati gharana and were under the tutelage of their father Pratap Narayan. They learnt to play the piano and the guitar from Laxmikant Pyarelal. Vijeta Pandit and Sulakshana Pandit are their sisters, Aadesh Srivastava their brother-in-law and Pandit Jasraj their uncle.
In 1992 the brother duo made their debut with the music direction in the film Yaara Dildara. But their first super hit was Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar followed by Khiladi, both films projecting the emotions of college youths. Thereafter the duo became a much sought after pair. They went on to directing many films one after another - Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992),Aadmi (1993),Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994),Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995),Khamoshi (1996),Yes Boss (1997),Badadin (1998),Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998),Pyar To Hona Hi Tha (1998),Dhai Akshar Prem Ke (2000),Mohabbatein (2000),Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000),Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001),Aankhen (2002),Kranti (2002),Soch (2002),Chalte Chalte (2003),Zameer (2003),Hum Tum (2004),Rok Sako To Rok Lo (2004),Chand Sa Roshan Chehra (2005),Filmstar (2005),Pyaar Mein Twist (2005) and plenty others. They have helped many singers climb the ladder of success with the help of their popular musical numbers. In fact they even wrote songs for actors - "Aye kya bolti tu" for Amir Khan in Ghulam and another for Sanjay Dutt for a song in Khubsurat.
Their music seems to be inspired by RDBurman. However when they they were confronted with charges of plagiarism, they blurted out that very often they are told to create music "like" that of some other preceding director.
The duo lead a life sheltered from media eyes. But Jatin was spotted in the film Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. We also saw them on television as judges of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and Star Voice of India.
After the separation (the causes of which are unknown though gossipmongers cite financial differences), they have been working independently. Lalit has composed for Life Mein Kabhi Kabhi, Horn Ok Pleasssss, Showbiz. Jatin is working on Raat Gayi, Baat Gayi. He is now concentrating on the film Krishnakanter Will which requires him to produce music like that of pre-modern India. He has composed for the president of the Indian Business and Professional Council, Abbas Ali Mirza.
