  • Similarities with ‘Harmonium’

Laptop rating: 0 out of 10(Aditya Chakrabarty wrote on 15 Apr 2012)

‘Harmonium’ is a film which was about a harmonium where every family who got to possess the harmonium had bad luck coming their way and it tells the story of each family and what they eventually have to go through thanks to the harmonium.
The world has changed and nowadays we communicate through SMSes ,mails as the world has undergone a tremendous change in every which way including the modes of communication. A P.C is a very essential thing for most of us in our everyday lives and as far as this film is concerned, it is a laptop which connects lives, connects people and brings people together. However much Kaushik Ganguly tries to deny any similarities between the two films, there are two many similarities to take his word.Okay, the treatment might be different and the presentation might be a little different.

Here instead of a harmonium it is a laptop which starts destroying people when it passes through their hands. The laptop which initially belongs to a doctor lands up in the hands of a small time hotel owner who buys it from one of his clients, a taxi driver. The hotel owner is later accused of stealing the laptop by the doctor(incidentally the hotel owner’s son is in love with the doctor’s daughter). He gives away the laptop to his blind landlord who asks his assistant to start using it instead of the old typewriter , but even she leaves him as she is about to get married and later on we discover that her father has passed away. The blind landlord gives away the laptop to his friend who discovers the identity of his long lost son from the web and even lands up at the pace of his son’s adoptive parents. However the end is a tragedy.

The film shows how tragedy befalls the characters in their own respective ways. The director Kaushik Ganguly is probably the star of the film.He is simply brilliant as Partho, the blind landlord. Here is a man whose world comes crashing down when his assistant decides to leave him as she is about to get married. Here is a man who depends on her for all his needs and is even emotionally attached to her as well as he considers her to be more than her assistant, but alas, she does connect with him emotionally as well but at a different level.Yet somehow it seems as if Partho and Sobha(his assistant) can’t do without each other, yet somehow that barrier remains somewhere.Partho and Sobha’s angst is potrayed beautifully by Kaushik Ganguly and Ananya Chatterjee .These two artists really stand out in the film.Another actor Pijush Ganguly is also excellent as Tarun, the small time hotel owner who manages to buy the laptop with utmost difficulty, but is then called a thief,a something which he finds hard to accept.Saswata Chatterjee is as usual good as Mr.Mukherjee, the tea planter who begins to despise Indra just because he thinks that he might lose his right over his son and insecurity and his weakness to bear his own son starts to haunt him.The other members of the cast have also done a commendable job.The background score is nice by Mayookh Bhowmick, a national award winner. However the ending is a bit shocking and is not expected from a film maker like Kaushik Ganguly.Rahul Bose is quite affective as Indra .Our very own Jojo(yes, the playback singer) is seen in this film in a cameo.
