    Both the Ways….

Love Stories, we have seen so many different types of love stories in Hindi cinema. Some with lots of melodrama, some over the top, some direct dil se,etc etc. Director Imtiaz Ali who had given few love stories in past and that too all different from each other brings us a tale of two love story of different era woven in one film. let’s find out what’s different in these love stories than the ones we have watched earlier?

“Love Aaj Kal” is story of Jai {Saif Ali Khan} a carefree, happy go lucky guy and his relationship with Meera {Deepika}. Both are perfect for each other and have different goals and dreams in their life, which are totally different from each other’s dream. Thus they decided to break off their relationship on a happy note. Meera leaves for India to fulfill her dream and Jai starts working hard to fulfill his dream. Meanwhile Jai meets Veer Singh {Rishi Kapoor} who believes in true love and starts sharing his love story to Jai. Jai does not believe in the love of Veer Singh and starts enjoying his life. But slowly slowly the Veer Singh type of love starts flowing in Jai Veins and starts more confusion to his and meera’s relationship. What happens next is all the film about.

Story is simple yet complicated and blended in perfect manner. The screenplay is good, it makes the film quite interesting and different in first half of the film. the comparison scenes of love in today’s times and yesterday’s times can be easily identified by everyone thanks to the narration style and its simplicity. The film goes bit hay way in the second half when deepika is getting married. The scenes out there were quite abrupt and one does feel something was missing in that part. The editor could have use his brilliance out there in those scenes and minimize the flaws in the film. Camera work is good, but nothing great. Locations are nice and interesting. Dialogs are great in the first half, but in the emotional scenes again fell short. Aam aadmi/Mango aadmi dialogue deserves a special mention and gets thumbs up.

Music by Pritam is good but nothing in comparison with his and directors last score. Still Twist makes our foot tapping. Yeh Dooriyan was total misfit in the film, such a good song felt wasted. My fav was Chor bazaree in terms of music and picturisation. But the best one is the Main Kay hon., full marks for its picturisation and putting depth in Jai Character. The Punjabi numbers are good.

Director Imtiaz Ali has selected more matured and different subject than his last film. This one has more of serious element than the humorous one. His way of narrating the story is great and establishing the characters is fantastic. As I said earlier one can easily identify with the characters at some or another point. On the flip side the film fell short on the emotional level which was there but could had been more romantic or beautiful. Also there was something missing in the second half to have the feel good factor.

Performance by Saif as Jai was good as the character was tailor made for him. But then we have seen him in such character many times in films like Hum Tum, Ta Ra Rum Pum, etc. still one can’t see anyone else in this role besides him only. Though he did look bit old in this role and also at times bit repetitive. Saif as young Veer was fantastic, the maturity and the innocence required in this character was just prefect. So on overall basis full marks to him for attempting two different characters in different way. Deepika was cute and lovable. In many scenes she has just expressed her feelings by mere silence and facial expressions, which were simply great. She was perfect for the role of Meera, a mixture of Naughtiness and Simplicity. Rishi Kapoor gives us another great performance in the short and small role. New Comer Actress in the role of harleen looked cute and sweet. But needs to brush up her dancing skills.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hain dum?

Dum hain kaafi dum hain but second half mein kahin kutch kum hain. Still one does enjoy and cherish the first half which was flawless and different than usual love stories. The movie does satisfy the hunger of good film at many levels, making us wish that just bit more care if was taken in the second half the entire thirst for a good film this year could had been filled. Go and Watch the film and enjoy it either Jai way or Veer way, in short both the ways.
