Among the many social ills prevailing in our country, helpless young/old women being termed as witches is a major ill prevailing in our society specially in the villages.’Mati O Manush’ is one such film which is about the story of Jhunu, a young girl staying in a village with her parents who is termed as a witch for no reason whatsoever! She is speech impaired and the villagers make a scapegoat out of her and instigate the other villagers into terming her as a witch. The local M.L.A is also part of the system it as the group of sanyasis who are very powerful in the village and are able to influence the villagers. During a particular religious function when young babies are blessed by a sanyasi who hangs by a hook which is inside his back, after completing a few rounds the sanyasi hands over a baby to one of fellow sanyasis who drops the baby.Jhunu who happens to be present there is held responsible. The M.L.A’s henchmen take her away and lock her in her own house. There is a powerful storm and it blows away their house and she escapes. The sanyasis chase her and eventually beat her to death.

This is a social film so it is bound to be unsuccessful and not have many takers, but it is not a bad film at all. The cast turns up with decent performances, but the star of the show is Rimjhim Gupta who doesn’t have a dialogue in the entire film as she can not speak The little known actress who has starred in quite a few commercial films(nowadays she appears in a few low budget ones, she was last seen in Bappaditya Bandapadhay’s Clerk) has never got any recognition of any kind, but film maker should this particular performance and think of her for future projects. No one knew she was capable of this quality of acting. Excellent!
