    Madhabi Chakraborty was born in Kolkata on March 10th, 1943. Her real name is Madhabi. Her father’s name is Sailendranath Mukhopadhay. She has studied up to 10th standard. She acted in many films as a child artist. But her debut as a lead female actress in the film “Tonsil” in the year 1956, directed by Tapan Sinha. Her next film was “Baiyshe Shraban” in 1960. It was directed by Mrinal Sen. The producer of that film was Bijoy Chaterjee gave her name ‘Madhabi’. Her fourth film was Mahanagar in 1963 directed by Satyajit Ray. She acted in three of Ray’s films. The other two film are- Kapurush O Mahapurush and Charulata (1964). In the next year 1965 she acted in Ritwik Ghatak’s “Subarna Rekha”. The next big director in her life was Purnendu Patree. She acted in “Streer Patra”. She acted in “Banpalashir Padabali in 1973, directed by Uttam Kumar. Next important film director in her career is Tarun Majumdar. She acted in his “Ganadebeta” in the year 1979. Madhabi has acted in the film of all major and important directors of her time.

    She received “Urbasi” award for her performance in “Dibaratrir Kabya”. She is the only Bengali actress who has received this prestigious national award ever. She has directed one film “Atmaja”. She also acted in TV serials and commercial stage. She is married to actor Nirmal Kumar. She has two daughters.
