While seeking a job, educated unemployed youth Shashinath comes to Madhuganj where he meets influencial jamindar Mahadev Chowdhury. Mahadev is impressed by Shashinath's personality and appoints Shashinath as an employee. Mahadev gets his only daughter Sumati married with Shashinath as Mahadev found Shashinath a responsible person who can take care of Mahadev's jamindari in future. Immediately after the marriage when it was a time for Sumati and Shashinath to come closer, Mahadev sends his son-in-law always from Sumati for a couple of months with a responsibility of making a land agriculture worthy by bringing the water from river Subarnarekha into the land. Shashinath, being very dedicated, gives his lebour as well as supervises people during ploughing the land and cutting trees. During these days Shashinath became very weak and sick. When he was bought to Mahadev's residence doctor detected Shashinath's disease as tuberculosis. In those days there was no cure for the disease at the same time, it was infectious. So when the doctor suggested Mahadev to keep Shashinath away, immediately a hut was built just nearby Mahadev's premises. A lady got appointed to take care of Shashinath's health. Being not in touch to help husband Sumati slowly gets detached from Shashinath and gets busy with a school for village children. Sumati also gets involved with the school master Joydeb. But after a storm Sumati again felt for her husband by getting a lesson from their horse Bahadur, who was dedicated to his master. Sumati at the end comes to Shashinath.
