Madhuri Dixit was born on May 15, 1965 in a middle-class marathi family. she was born to Shankar and Snehlata Dixit, of a Marathi Chitpavan Brahmin family. She was the eldest of the 4 children to her parents. Although Madhuri had learnt Kathak right from her childhood, Hindi films were never in her mind. Madhuri dixit was academically very inclined, and always wanted to be a micro-biologist, for which she enrolled in Parle college.

When Madhuri was studying at Parle college, she was offered Abodh (1986). After initial hesitance, Madhuri did that film and although it flopped, Madhuri was noticed and went on to sign many films after that. However, all of them were flops at box-office.

Madhuri became hugely popular with Tezaab (1988), where her performance was appreciated and her marvellous Dancing skills were displayed to a tee. In 1989, Madhuri’s career reached its peak with hits like Parinda, Ram Lakhan and Tridev. Although Madhuri had small roles in them, she benefited never-the-less. Madhuri’s turning point was Dil (1990), where she was paired opposite Aamir Khan. Dil was a block-buster and Madhuri finally established herself as a bankable star-actress.

After Dil, Madhuri’s successful run at the box-office continued for around 5 years. She gave hits after another like Saajan (1991), Khel (1991), Beta (1992), Khalnayak (1993), Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994) and Raja (1995). She attained an iconic status due to her Classy beauty and enigmatic presence on screen. After Raja (1995), Madhuri was even touted as Female Amitabh Bachchan due to her unabated run on the box-office. However, Madhuri did face a tough time when she had 8 flops in a row after Raja. Critics were just beginning to write her off, when she came back with Dil To Pagal Hai (1997). She married an NRI Doctor Ram Kumar Nene in 1999, after which she stopped doing films. However, she did complete her pending films like Pukar (2000), Lajja (2001), Hum tumhare Hain Sanam (2002) and Devdas (2002). Her performance was appreciated in all of them, proving she still was capable of a lot more. Madhuri came back from U. S. A. to do a Yash Raj film Aaja Nachle (2007), which flopped at the box-office however.

Madhuri Dixit has won Filmfare Best actress award on 4 occasions – Dil (1990), Beta (1992), Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994) and Dil To Pagal Hai (1997). She also won the Filmfare best Supporting actress award for Devdas in 2002.

Madhuri Dixit now lives in USA, happily married and with 2 kids.
