    Mahesh Bhatt was born on September 20, 1949. His father Nana Bhai Bhatt was a famous film producer. Hence, Mahesh Bhatt had the influence of hindi films right from his childhood. After completing his studies, Mahesh Bhatt assisted Raj Khosla on Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971) for an experience. Although he also made a documentary film Sakat (1970), he assisted Raj Khosla on many films.

    Mahesh Bhatt’s first film was Manzilein Aur Bhi Hai (1974). It sank without a trace. He also made a few other films like Vishwasghaat (1977), Lahu Ke Do Rang (1979) and a few more. Lahu Ke Do Rang fetched him some recognition however.

    Mahesh Bhatt struck gold with Arth (1982), which was based on his alliance with Actress Parveen Babi. Arth met with both Critical acclaim and commercial success, and Mahesh Bhatt became a popular name overnight. Mahesh Bhatt many more acclaimed films in the 80s like Saaransh (1984), Janam (1985), Naam (1986), Kaash (1987). He became a cult name for his human subjects and touching concepts. In 1987, Mahesh Bhatt established a production company Vishesh films, along with his brother Mukesh Bhatt. He also made Daddy (1989), which launched his daughter Pooja Bhatt.

    The 90s saw Mahesh Bhatt getting money-oriented and directing too many films. He kicked off the decade with a gritty Awargi (1990). Then, Mahesh Bhatt went with the flow and made some romantic films like Aashiqui (1990), Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahi (1991), Hum Hain Raahi Pyar ke (1993). In between, He made the films that belonged to his forte like Sadak (1991), Sir (1993) and Phir Teri Kahaani Yaad Aayi (1993). In 1995, Mahesh Bhatt made Swabhimaan, a TV serial scripted by Shobhaa De and proved his deft handling of that medium also. He made many more films thereafter, Criminal (1995), Tamanna (1997) and Jakhm (1998) being the prime ones of them. In 1999, He made Kartoos (1999) which was his last film as a director. Then, he moved to production and produced many successful films like Kasoor (2001), Raaz (2002), Murder (2004) and Gangster (2006). He also wrote many films like Sangharsh (1999) and Woh Lamhe (2006).

    Mahesh Bhatt has won Filmfare Award on 3 occasions – Best screenplay for Arth in 1982, and Best story for Saaransh and Jakhm in 1984 and 1998 respectively.

    His daughter Pooja Bhatt is also an actress who has acted in many films like Daddy (1989), Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahi (1991) and Zakhm (1998) He is married to Soni Razdan, who also is a famous TV and Film actress.
