Mahesh Bhatt can feel the pulse of the masses. In the late 70s he made a film "Lahoo Ke Do Rang", in which he took Vinod Khanna( as James Bond image), Danny ( as Bruce Lee image), Bappi Lahiri who was then enjoying his "salad days", to compose music and took Suraj-Sanim to create the lost -and-found plot. Helen was removed from her beaten-track to prove herself an actress par excellence. The melody "chahiye thora pyaar"surged far and wide. The film proved a big commercial success.

If questioned, which is the best film by Mahesh Bhatt ? I would relentlessly name "Sarangsh".The story pivots round the ill-fated old couple, who having lost their only son, catch at the young paying guests to tide over their fathomless compunction. The film is free from arresting star-casting. Anupam was at his debut and Rohini was almost fresher on the screen. But, their outstanding performances never let us feel the want of charming young faces. The old couple live in a body to die in a body.

From "the Mahesh Bhatt Treasury", pick up just two films "Arth"and " Saragsh", and be convinced, how serious Mahesh Bhatt can be. The former deals with the challenged conjugal life owing to the illicit link of husband with a lady. The story of "eternal triangle"is nothing uncommon. But, the uncommonness lies in the making, its treatment and of course, its ending that shows no re-union, but wife's blunt rejection of time-borne convention. Mahesh has extracted the best of Smita and Shabana.

Like Guru Dutt, Mahesh Bhatt too can bring synthesis between art and commerce. "Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahi","Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke", "Naam", "Janam" "Aasiquee" are the stamps of his dexterity in fusing good plot, well-knitted screen-play, catchy music, simpleness in story-telling and comprehensiveness. In these films he has kept vulgar and violence at bay, and presented them for universal acceptibility. From grandpa to grandchildren can watch these movies in a body and in peerless disposition.
