Major releases hit the box office this week and among them is heavily star studded Main aur Mrs. Khanna, starring Salam Khan, Sohail Khan and Kareena Kapoor. Directed by debutant director Prem Soni and produced by Sohail Khan the film brings romance to the screen in the holiday season. But with widely publicized action/adventure on one screen and comedy on the other, are we in a mood for romance? After Wanted we’re hankering to see more of cute and naughty Salman but in this film he’s more serious and arrogant and in the beginning he plays an unconvincing lover boy which is quite surprising for someone like Salman who’s best at his lover-boygiri!
The story is about Samir and Raina Khanna who are a happily married couple living in Melbourne till a financial crunch brings differences in their marriage. For better opportunities Samir must leave the country. Unbelievably Samir decides to send Raina back to his hometown, Delhi, while he goes to Singapore to earn more money. Thus at the Melbourne international airport three lives cross paths Raina’s, Samir’s and Akash’s. An ordinary cafeteria attendant Akash falls hopelessly in love with Raina and helps her become independent as she fights to justify her decision of staying back in Melbourne. Raina has to decide whether her love and loyalty for her husband Samir, who left her to pursue success, is more justified than her faith and trust in her new-found friend, while Akash has to decide whether what he feels for a married woman is lust or true love and whether he's justified in trying to win her at all costs, even at the cost of her marriage.
The “Main” in Main aur Mrs. Khanna is purely Sohail Khan ‘cause Main hi hoon producer aur Main hi hoon actor! Just about two hours long the film does hold your attention in the second half but the first half is quite boring. There are just so many glaring errors in the film for instance how does someone on a store clerk’s salary manage to rent a palatial mansion? Somewhere in the middle of the film Raina has to fake-marry Akash for a work permit so that she can continue working… what! Are the Australian authorities stupid? How can a married woman who hasn’t divorced her husband get happily married again? Don’t they have a system of verifying one’s details? Then for the period that Samir and Raina are away from each other it seems as though they’re not in touch with each other… so are they separated? Because on one hand Raina can’t stop quipping about her love for her selfish husband and on the other hand the husband couldn’t care less!
Main aur Mrs. Khanna seems confused somewhere because in the first half it plays more on the romantic … more than good friends tone but in the second half it’s more like Dostana with Yash Tonk and Sohail Khan trying desperately to separate the couple. The music is bearable with Don’t Say Alvida staying on your mind. Priety Zinta’s not happening! And the song too seems quite forced and unnecessary.
As far as the performances go Salam does well as the mature and to a large extent patronizing husband Samir. Kareena seems to be playing her second half wala sad self from Jab we Met again and she can’t act drunk at all and she shouldn’t even try it! Sohail Khan looks old to be playing Akash’s part and he’s pretty much the way he is in all his movies only this time he’s kept a check on the funny faces and the cheap humour.
Overall Main aur Mrs. Khanna is bearable and u could watch it if Blue’s houseful else wait for this one to play on a long flight or a bus trip!
