Subhasini Saigal writes articles on a character names Azad and she highlights corruption in politics. Her boss Gokulchand is impressed with Subhasini's articles and decides to use the figure of Azad to his own advantage. Subhasini is asked by the public to present Azad. Not knowing what to do she hires an unemployed person with a high quality of leadership as Azad (Amitabh Bachchan) for some money. He impresses the public with his speeches and soon becomes their hero. He is supported by students, farmers and sugar mill workers. This affection makes Azad a real leader. Gokulchand supports Azad as he is targeting the strongholds of Gulabchand, the CM. Initially Subhasini is against presenting Azad as real but later by seeing Azad's effort, she joins in. Azad's greatest achievement is when he forms a union of sugar mills workers asking them to hold a strike demanding that their demands be fulfilled. He wins the help of the the farmers who are into the supply of sugarcane. The management agrees to the workers' demands and pulls off money and support from Gulabchand. After seeing Azad's success, Gokulchand asks Azad to support him in becoming the CM but he revolts. Gokulchand then exposes the truth to the public that Azad is a hired leader. The public gets agitated and beats Azad to death. The final take-home of the film is Azad's will and determination to stand up for justice. Later his video is used to inspire people.
