The movie is set in Darjeeling, and shot at St. Paul's.

Major Ram Prasad Sharma (Shahrukh Khan) , 'goes back to school', in order to complete his education. He is actually on a mission to protect Gen. Amarjeet Bakshi's (Kabir Bedi)'s daughter Sanjana (Amrita Rao), whose life is under threat.

It is seen that the governments of India and Pakistan have launched, "Project Milaap", where both the governments will release the POWs from the previous wars. Raghavan (Sunil Shetty), a deranged ex-armyman-turned-militant does not want the peaceful operation to turn to reality and makes an attempt on Gen. Amarjeet Bakshi's (Kabir Bedi) life. Gen. Bakshi, thinks that Raghavan will attack his daughter next and has thus sent Ram on this mission.

On the other hand, Ram's father Brigadier Shekhar Sharma (Naseeruddin Shah) confesses to him, on his deathbed, that his wife and son, Lakshman, had left him many years ago due to his infidelity. He tells Ram of his last wish, that his family be reunited under one roof.

As destiny would have it, Ram learns that his younger brother Laxman "Lucky"(Zayed Khan) is studying in the same college that he would be attending.

Hence, Major Ram starts off on his dual mission. Will he be successful in both? Will he also find true love, in the form of Miss Chandni (Sushmita Sen), who is the Chemistry teacher?
