Beena, a young orphaned girl, arrives in Bombay as a starry-eyed bride Little does she realise that her marriage has been a disaster. The unassuming husband, who had no interest in the marriage, shirks all responsbility and leaves home. Beena becomes the target of ridicule by her in-laws. She starts working and slowly, the familys attitude towards her changes. When Beena gets involved with her colleague, eyebrows are raised but no one complains for fear of losing the golden goose. All goes well, until one fine day her husband returns. Beena is now reduced to the position of the classical whore, scandalised and bullied by her father-in-law. Shes forcibly locked into a room, and recedes into total silence, wondering as to whether shes still alive or not.
