Ratnam has dealt with a wide variety of topics, from the classic Indian love story to political thrillers.
Before entering into film industry, Mani Ratnam received a management degree at the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies in Mumbai, and had initially started out as a management consultant.
His first film Pallavi Anu Pallavi (1983), starring Anil Kapoor, won the State Award from Karnataka that year.
His trademark in each every of his films is that he uses music by A. R. Rahman since giving him his debut venture in Roja (1992).
In each and every of his movie, he often picturises critical moments in Rain or in a train.
His films Nayagan (1987) and Anjali (1990) were submitted by India in contest for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Ratnam has won multiple National Film Awards, five Filmfare Awards (South), four Filmfare Awards (Hindi), and twelve international film festival awards.
