Manoj Kumar's cousin Lekhraj Bakhri who was making films in Mumbai gave him the first break in a cameo in Fashion (1957) where he played the role of a beggar.
Manoj Kumar did a special cameo in Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye directed by T Rama Rao and presented by L.V. Prasad.
He presented the film and also did a cameo in his brother Rajiv Goswami's debut movie as producer and director, Deshwasi (1991).
Manoj Kumar got the inspiration for Upkar (1967) from Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, who told him at a special screening for Shahid to make a film on Jai Jawaan, Jai Kisan. He wrote the story on his way back to Mumbai from Delhi in the train.
Manoj Kumar is also a homeopath doctor and learnt it after Ashok Kumar cured him of some warts on his face using homeopathy.

Manoj Kumar does not travel by air. While travelling abroad through flight for the shooting of "Purab Aur Paschim", a fear struck his mind and he decided never to board a plane again.
The idea to make SHOR came to Manoj Kumar while he was relaxing at his farmhouse in Delhi, after completing PURAB AUR PASCHIM. A few friends commented on how peaceful it was and that there was no ‘ shor’ in the vicinity.
