Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola rating: 0 out of 10(Shashank Mehta wrote on 11 Jan 2013)

I had decided not to watch this movie. But as it happens often, nothing goes as per plan, i eneded up being in a movie theatre shelling out an exorbitant 290 bucks per ticket. And boy! i wish i would hav stuck to my original decision. Vishal Bhardwaj disappoints again. The story is age old of a ruthless landlord mandola(pankaj kapur)trying to acquire farmer's lands by unfair means dreaming of building a concrete jungle in conjuction with a corrupt minister (shabana azmi), with matru (Imran khan) mandola's man friday being the robin hood of farmers. Its a humorous take on the subject which fails on most counts. The humour seems forced except a few scenes and witty lines which you expect out of a VB (Vishal Bharadwaj) film. The narrative is slow and dragged and has the ability to put one to sleep without any difficulty (recommended for insomniacs). Most part of the film is nothing but rambling of a drunken kapur. Its one of those movies that you wait for it to get over. Bijlee (Anushka Sharma) kapurs daughter plays her usual bubbly self with no substance to her character. The chemistry between the 3 lead actors is absent and doesnt stay with you. The only saving grace is the performances by all actors. The ease with which kapur transitions his character from a ruthless landlord (when he is sober) to one who sides with the farmers against himself (when he is drunk) is commendable. Imran Khan with his rustic look adds flair to an otherwise dull movie. Shabana azmi as the corrupt politician is commendable. Also, Arya babbar who plays the dumb witted son of Shabana Azmi is again commendable. He is able to put a smile on your face everytime he is on screen. As much fancy and inviting the name seems, the film is equally uninteresting and average. After movies like Maqbool and Omkara,we are still waiting for that cinematic brilliance Mr. VB.
    I can't give it more than 2.5.
    Go at your own risk.
