Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola rating: 4 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 11 Jan 2013)

I clearly remember when I had started hearing music of Gulzar’s ‘Maachis’ I was in love with the music right from the first song. It was that time when I came to know about Vishal Bharadwaj. Later I started following him and he was among the list of my preferred music directors. I even heard his earlier works followed by Television work leading to his directed films like ‘Makdee’, ‘Maqbool’ {which till date is his best} & ‘Omkara’. After watching ‘Maqbool’ & ‘Omkara’ there were no words left for this ace director. But with films like ‘Kaminey’, ‘Blue Umbrella’ & ‘Saat Khoon Maaf’ he was bit by the pseudo-intelligence bug, which started growing with every film he made. Personally I don’t have any issues with the director’s pseudo- intelligence stuff till the time their films don’t lack on the Entertainment Quotient. If these films keep you indulged in the film or go well with the theme or message of the film it’s perfectly all right with me. But then most of the times these makers get lost in their own world leaving behind many film lovers like us to waste half of our time using our I.Q level while watching the film. Vishal Bharadwaj brings us a Dark comedy ‘Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola’ which is an unusual name with total unusual theme, Promos & Songs. So let’s find out whether this unusual stuff by its brilliant film maker will leave another milestone film for us or end up like many other films which are made only for its Directors wardrobe.

‘Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola’ is story of Harry Mandola {Pankaj Kapoor} an ambitious millionaire residing in integral part of Haryana. His dream is to establish one of India’s biggest Car Plant where he is supported by the Minister Chaudhari Devi {Shabhana Azmi}. [Spoiler Alert Begin] Harry is obsessed with drinking and so when drunk it reveals his split personality becoming a local Haryanvi guy who is a gem by heart and supports the villagers [Spoiler Alert End]. In order to make his association more strong he fix up his daughter Bijlee’s {Anushka Sharma}marriage with Minister’s son {Arya Babber}. But then there is his driver cum subordinate Matru {Imraan Khan} who has some other plans. What Plans? Well that’s what the entire film is about.

Basic plotline might look like straight lift from 80’s films where a Thakur is trying to take away the innocent villagers land and then there is our desi hero who works for him, later supports the villagers. Also the love track between rich & poor, corrupt politicians, etc. We have seen such plots in many of Jeetendra, Anil Kapoor, Dharmendra type films in past, but it’s the treatment and screenplay which makes this film total contrast of those typical potboiler dramas. Vishal & his creative team present us this worn out tale in such a different and stylish manner that many might find it total new and different. Right from the first scene of the film you will understand that this is not a usual type of film with loads of crazy stuffs happening in the film.In the first half of the film all the scenes where Pankaj Kapoor is drunk are hilarious and wacky. Also scenes such as Pankaj Kapoor firing Imraan in the village, the whole Pankaj – Navneet Nishan – ‘Bhais’ track, Pankaj – Imraan talking with Well followed by Arya Babber & his gang in the Farms, Shabhana Azmi’s Speech on Progress, The whole Tribute to ‘Macbeth’ by Imraan, Anushkha, Arya & others are total entertaining.
On the flip side the post interval portions are highly boring followed by dragging climax, overdose of crazy stuffs and weak screenplay ruins the show. It becomes worse with the length of the film which is pretty long and lacks the entertainment quotient in a big way. Many might find it pale and total boring. Camera Work is good and keeps the mood of the film alive. Editing is weak, especially in the second half where it should’ve been pretty tight and crisp.

Music by Vishal is Nice, but not like his past work. ‘Oye Boy’ is the most popular and fantastic song. ‘Khamakha’ is a gem which is very well placed in the film. ‘Chori Chori’ & “Title Song’ are great. ‘Khatra Hain’ is advance version of ‘Ho Gai Picture Shuru’ from ‘Barfi’. Rest all songs goes well with the feel of the film. Background music is superb.

Vishal Bharadwaj as a director has been experimenting with every film of his, which is a great thing to do for any creative genius. Yes, the expectations also keeps building up with every release of the film maker. Here he ventures into a political satire where he tries to indulge his creativity through lots of various ways. His fans might like it, but a normal film lover might find it difficult to understand and miss out the whole point. Also somewhere in between the whole purpose of the film gets a bit lost along with super long second half making the film boring in parts. You tend to lose your interest in the film at frequent intervals. You might also get a feeling that since it’s a Vishal Bharadwaj film it has to be good and with all those metaphors he has used in the film, it’s a film for intelligent audience. That’s true & yes I know he is a creative genius but that does not mean whatever he makes we have to accept it blindly.

Pankaj Kapoor is brilliant in this film; one will love all his drunken scenes and will wait for him to get drunk in the film. His hallucinations with pink buffalo are hilarious and look out for his fantastic expressions in these scenes. Right from his dialect, cuss words, looks, mannerisms, etc he is in full form. Imraan Khan tries to be different and appears different than his typical mono style expressions and roles. But by adding moustache & beard along with ‘Haryanvi Accent’ does not make him a better actor. He still looks the same as he is in most of his films. Anushkha Sharma looks hot and adds the charm to the film wished she had more to offer in terms of performance. Shabhana Azmi is great as corrupt politician and one might remember her negative roles from films like ‘loins Of Punjab’, etc. Arya Babber is a cute rascal and total likable. Navneet Nishan should have had bit more role. All others gave good support, though the actors who did roles of villagers were terrible.

So bol meri ‘Filmki Khopdi’ iss film mein kitna hai Dum ?

Dum hain in terms of Pankaj Kapoor’s brilliant performance, crazy first half, good songs, etc. But all the Dum fizzles out as the movie progresses with never ending second half full of boredom and predictable scenes. Also the director’s pseudo-intelligence stuff does not work this time as he focuses more on it rather than the film. Adding wackiness and craziness in film is great, but remember overdose of anything leaves behind nothing but bad taste. For Example if you over use the ‘Bijlee’ it ends up to ‘Batti Gul’.
