Mehmood was born on September 29, 1932 in Bombay. Her mother Mumtaz Ali was a famous actress-dancer. Mehmood was the 9th child to his parents. After completing his schooling, Mehmood did many odd jobs. Once he was a driver to director P. L. Santoshi, and then was hired to teach Table Tennis to Meena Kumari. It was after his marriage that Mehmood thought of working in films, so that he could earn some big money in quick time.

Mehmood first appeared in a small role in Bimal Roy’s Do Bigha Zameen (1953). His next major role was in C.I.D (1956). He then played a small part in Pyaasa (1957).

Mehmood’s first major role was in Chote Nawab (1961). He then did Dil Tera Diwana (1962), where his performance was acclaimed a lot. After a few more supporting roles, Mehmood showed the first glimpse of his now-famous genius comic timing in Gumnaam (1965). Gumnaam was a huge hit, and Mehmood’s character of a hyderabadi butler became very popular. Next year, Mehmood reached iconic status with his performances in Pyaar Kiye Jaa, Arzoo and Johar-Mehmood in Goa loved by one and all. Mehmood was now the most popular comedian in hindi films.

By the late 60s, When it came to Comedy roles, Mehmood was the producers’ first and only choice. His other memorable performances were in films like Padosan (1968), Tumse Achcha Kaun Hai (1969), Humjoli (1970). Soon, a time came when Mehmood was as big as any top hero. He charged more than most of the heroes even for a small role. That was the power Mehmood held by 1970. In 1971, Mehmood produced Bombay to Goa which was a run-away hit. He gave many more hits on his own credit like Do Phool (1973), Kunwara Baap (1974), Maryada (1975) and Sabse Badaa Rupaiyya (1976). However, Mehmood’s career graph came down after 1976 when he didn’t have any big solo hits. Though he continued doing big films like Des Pardes (1979), Man Pasand (1980), Khuddar (1982), Mehmood really didn’t command the same power by the time the 80s came. His only memorable role thereafter was in Raj Kumar Santoshi’s Andaz Apna Apna (1994). He last appeared in Barsaat Ki Raat (1998). On July 23, 2004 Mehmood passed away while he was asleep in Pennsylvania where he had gone for his treatment of lung disease he had been suffering from years.

Mehmood won 3 Filmfare awards – Best supporting actor award for Dil Tera Diwana (1962), Best Comedian award for Pyaar Kiye Jaa (1966) and Vardan (1975).

Mehmood’s son Lucky Ali is a famous singer and actor who has appeared In films like Sur (2002), Kaante (2002) and Kasak (2005) Mehmood also acted as a child artist in famous hit of the 40s, Kismet (1943) Mehmood was married to actress Meena Kumari’s sister Madhu.
