Mehul Kumar was born on July 1, 1949 in Bombay. His real name is Mohammed Baloch. In 1975, Mehul Kumar began his struggle and decided to start his career with Gujarati films instead.
Mehul Kumar’s directorial debut was a Gujarati film Santu Jamadar (1977). After this, He made several Gujarati films to make his ends meet. While his struggle to get a break in Hindi films was still On. His first hindi film Anokha Bandhan (1982) starring Shabana Azmi and Navin Nischol didn’t do any wonders, which was followed by another failure Love Marriage (1984).
Mehul Kumar’s first successful film was Marte Dam Tak (1988). It was panned by critics, but the audience at B and C centres loved it. After Marte Dam Tak, Mehul kumar made many action films which flopped however. Mehul Kumar’s breakthrough film was Tirangaa (1992) which starred Nana Patekar and Raj Kumar. With heavy dialogue and melodramatic concept, Tirangaa proved to be a huge hit. And Mehul Kumar became a name to reckon with. Mehul Kumar just went several notches higher with his saracastic Krantiveer (1994). This film proved to be Nana Patekar’s tour de force, and was a blockbuster. Mehul Kumar didn’t look after that.
After Krantiveer, Mehul Kumar cut down on his work. He then directed ABCL’s debut venture Mrityudaata (1997) which was a disaster at box-office. He brought Nana Patekar and Amitabh Bachchan together in Kohram (1999). Although the film flopped, it is remembered till date for its amazing casting coup. He made Kitne Door Kitne Paas (2002), which too flopped badly. His next film Jaago (2004) was based on a real life incident but it failed to make an impact.
He has also produced some of his films like Tirangaa (1992), Krantiveer (1994), Kohram (1999) and Jaago (2004)
