“Baap Re Baap”
Comedy, A big selling name in today’s Bollywood market. Its cherry toping to the cake if you have “Priyadarshan’s” name as a director. These formulas of Priyadarshan’s comedy movies along with paresh rawal have delivered good results at times. But as they say excess of anything is bad. Same happened with Priyadarshan's recent movies like Dhol, Chup Chup Ke, Bhagham Bhaag, etc. The magic was there, but just for the sake of name.
‘Mere Baap Pehle Aap’ is story of Janardhan Rane [Paresh Rawal] a widow, and his younger son Gaurav [Akshay Khanna]. They both share a different type of relationship. Both try to be father of each other at times. Janardhans best friend Mathur [Om Puri] is a old guy who wants to get married. He takes Janardhan with him in all his activity which leads them to jail in custody of Inspector B.B [Archana Puran Singh]. Gaurav does not like his father accompanying Mathur. Enters Shikha [Genelia D'Souza], who wanted to make Gaurav learn a lesson for a prank he had played on her in college days. After the Prank both become good friends. Janardhan also liked Shikha as Daughter in Law. In a occasion Janardhan is introduced to Shikhas Teacher Anuradha [Shobana]. Janardhan goes down memory lane where he used to love Anuradha. Gaurav and Shikha come to know about this and hence start the process to convince. Gaurav at one side has to convince his father to get married and another side Shikha whom he wants to marry. All these lead them to a journey of drama and events.
Music by Vidyasagar is strictly average and has nothing great to boost out. Story, Screenplay of the film was fine but needed more events of humor. The movie starts with good humor in first half and which disappears in the second half. Length of the movie is bit more which needed to be edited in certain places.
Priyadarshan’s direction is better than his last few movies but fails to join the gang of his classic comedies. Movie from comedy moves to drama in second half and which turns to be a negative point for the film. The camera angles and scene shots of the movie are of average quality. The director tried to play safe, which is good but it shows on the screen which is bad.
On the performance side…Akshay Khanna as Gaurav was fine and has done a decent job. Actually when is comes to comedy and suspense this guy fits the role and slip easily in them. Paresh Rawal is fine as ever and makes us laugh when ever given chance in the movie. Genelia D'Souza looks cute and suits the role but was bit loud at time. Archana Puran Singh as cop was good. Om Puri was the best of all and reminded his role in “King of Bollywood”. Wished he had more screen length, if he had then it would had added more fun to the movie. Manoj Joshi, Shobna, Rajpal Yadav were fine as per their role.
So….”bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hain dum???”
Dum hain.. but sirf first half mein uske baad kaafi kam hai. The movie starts with moments of laughter and fun. But as the movie goes down, the interest in the movie too goes down. Besides Priyadarshan’s movies there were loads of other comedy movies which were bad to worse and watching a movie from king of comedy makes us think “Baap Re Baap”. Though this movie is neither bad nor worse but due to good first half turns to be an average rating.
