In the age of official remakes, Boney Kapoor presents an old film, rehashed from an even older English film, packed in a new promotional wrapper with Himesh's nosey tunes. The only thing new about the movie was the promo song and promotional campaign all over the town saying, "They are back together". All other scenes were from a different era. There was a time, when Shahid looked like a cute boy and Kareena was not size zero and there was no Nawabi tag before her name...you get the drift. Yes, that was the time, Jab They Met and gave a hit together. But, the magic couldn't be recreated and much water has flown through Mithi river since.
About the story, it goes like this...the film makers found the DVD of a English movie "by accident". Interestingly, the name of the movie meant..."The faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident". And they thought, it's such a "fortunate discovery" for them...as they don't have to look for a story or scriptwriter. Voila, the film starts. So, if you have seen this English movie "by accident", you may skip the rest of the review.
Priya (Kareena) is a cool happy girl living a dream life, who doesn't believe in predictions, tarot card to be precise till she meets a friend's aunt (Kiron Kher) "by accident" for lunch and then her live changes. They are invited to Bangkok for a Youth conference, "by accident". Immy (Shahid) follows with his group of friends as one of his friend's girlfriend is in the group. The canteen boy acts principal in another attempt at comedy to convince Immy's father to sponsor the trip. By the way, Immy smokes, drinks and lies and it shows! Then, in the repetition of the ultimate cliche, the guys enter the girls' hostel dressed as girls to celebrate a birthday and when a ball pops out of it's place, they are caught. This has been repeated so many times in Hindi movies, that it's not even funny any more. Then, Immy finds Priya's diary "by accident" as he hides in her room, where she meticulously writes all that she is looking for in her ideal man. And her ideal man DOES NOT smoke, drink or lie. So, Immy starts proving her diary right and wins her love.
Then Priya finds out the diary story and they go separate ways. Then, the original story takes over. He writes his number on a Rs.50 note and she puts her number on a second hand book and decide to meet only if they find the numbers "by accident". After 3 yrs, Priya stays in Mumbai and Immy stays in New Delhi and "both are engaged to be married. Still, neither can shake the need to give fate one last chance to reunite them. Immy enlists the help of his friend to track down the girl he can't forget starting at the store where they met. Priya asks her musician fiance for a break before the wedding and, with her best friend in tow, flies from Mumbai to New Delhi hoping destiny will bring her soulmate back. Near-misses and classic Shakespearean confusion bring the two close to meeting a number of times but fate will have the final word". (The part within quotes is copied from the original movie synopsis with just the names and city changed, which I discovered "by accident" on imdb)
All well that ends well? Not really. Shahid tries his best to look cute and cool dude at the same time, while Kareena tries to don her sweet, innocent, charming Geet avatar from JWM. There is not much stress on acting and the film makers were too eager to cash in on the lead pair's off screen romance at the time this film was conceptualized. However, then an unfortunate event happened when they broke up, "by accident" and the film was sent to the cold storage. However, just like the movie, the reels have emerged in the theaters after 3 yrs by accident as the film maker kept on singing audience "Milenge Milenge" all this while. But, unlike the movie when Priya and Immy meet again "by accident", the audience is unlikely to show the same love for the film by flocking to the theaters as they are now engaged to different kinds of movies and different hot, cute couples. They don't have any date with destiny here.
Finally, at the beginning of the movie, I found Boney Kapoor's statement "thanking" his foes for making the release in the theaters possible, quite endearing. I wish, his friends keep it in the theaters for some time. But, then that is really a tall task.
Scoop: According to reliable sources, Himesh has bought the rights to the sequel of the movie. The first one is going to be called MIlenge Zarooorrrr and the next one to be called Milengezzzz...
