    In Nair's "Kama Sutra--a Tale of Love", her objective is to be an iconoclast. Nair believes that the Kama Sutra is severely misunderstood both in India and in the west and she asserts that her film has much more to do with sexual politics than with sexual positions--it is not simply a sex manual but about how to handle love---"the philosophical , the spiritual and the skill aspect, too. Kama and Sutra mean lessons of love and "my film is about the many faces of love from a time".

    Mira Nair's "Salaam Bombay" won the Camera d' Or in Cannes and was nominated for the Academy Award (Oscar) for the Best Foreign Film. Salaam Bombay offers a sociological study of Mumbai's underworld, its abandoned children, the exploitation of prostitutes and their powerlessness to hit back. Film critic Sridhar summed up --"Like the trains that have no home and flit from station to station, the children and adults of Bombay are constantly on the move seeking something elusive---"
