Miss Guinevere Pettigrew (played by Ms. McDormand) is a middle-aged governess living in London of 1939. She finds herself unfairly dismissed from her job, once again. Without any thing as severance pay, Miss Pettigrew realizes that she must take control of her life, for the first time in two decades. She does this with applomb, by grabbing a job of social secretary, which is competely outside her comfort level. Arriving at a penthouse apartment for the interview, Miss Pettigrew is thrown into the world of glamour and dizzying social life of an American pop actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse (Ms. Adams). Within minutes, Miss Pettigrew finds herself deep into a heady high-society milieu and, she starts living it up in her new life, within hours. Taking the Social Secretary designation to her heart, she tries to help her new friend Delysia navigate a love life and career, both of which are complicated by the three men in Delysia's orbit. There is devoted pianist Michael (Mr. Pace), an intimidating nightclub owner Nick (Mr. Strong), and a very impressionable junior impresario Phil (Mr. Payne). Miss Pettigrew is herself blushingly attracted to the gallant Joe (Mr. Hinds), who is a successful designer, and is tenuously engaged to haughty fashion maven Edythe (Ms. Henderson). Ms. Henderson is one person who senses that the new Social Secretary may be out of her element, and schemes to undermine her. Over the next 24 hours, Miss Pettigrew and Delysia will empower each other to discover their romantic destinies.
