Mithun Chakraborty is one of the leading actor-superstars not only of Bengal but of the entire India who was the reigning king in 1980s.He has earned huge acclaim as the dancing star of India. Mithun Chakraborty was born on 16th June, 1952 . His real name was Gouranga Chakraborty. After completing his Higher Secondary, he took admission in Scottish Church College .He completed his B.Sc in Chemistry.His call for acting was greater than anything. thus, he joined Television and Film Institute of India . Not only that, he took extensive training in martial arts. He was also an adroit sportsmen. Mithun is married to Bollywood actress Yogita Bali and has three sons and one daughter.
He made his debut in Mrinal Sen’s “Mrigaya” which gained him national recognition and National Film Award for Best Actor.He was noticed by Mrinal Sen during the convocation ceremony at Pune Film and television Institute. His debut Hindi movie was Sankalp where he played the role of a supporting actor. In 1974, he was seen in his first Bengali movie “Nadi theke Sagare” directed by Arindam Mukhopadyay. Mithun gained tremendous critical acclaim for his performance in the movie “Tahader Kotha”. In Bollywood, he established himself after lots of hardships. During his days in Mumbai , he used to perform with a dance group RANA RAGE.Disco Dancer(1982), Dance Dance (1987) made him a dancing superstar and an admirable actor to all .In 1990, his performance in the movie Agneepath had won him Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award.After this , he had done innumerable Bengali , Hindi and Bhojpuri movies. His recent films like Maniratnam’s Guru and Kalpana Lajmi’s Chingari has again gained him critical acclaim. Mithun Chakarborty has received innumerable number of awards for his brilliant acting and above all the love of people. In 1977 and 1993, he got National Film Award for Best Actor for his movies “Mrigaya” and “Tahader Kotha”.In 1977, Mrigaya had brought him the coveted B.F.J.A award. In 1996, he was awarded National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for Swami Vivekananda. In 2007, he also received Stardust Lifetime Achievement Award.
He is a noted social activist and a dedicated football lover who is keen to promote football in his native Bengal.Thus, he has also established Bengal Football Academy.
