Shila, the daughter of a professor is a beautiful girl & a brilliant student too. She is close to her father's favourite student Antony. Antony, an orphan since childhood, is a typical bohemian boy. He writes a thesis but never publishes it, he makes portraits but never holds an exhibition, he sings well but never records the songs. Suddenly a new boy comes into Shila's life. Shankar Acharya, a young handsome doctor is a close friend of Antony's. He comes to her house to visit her father, who has had a heart attack. Shankar's dedication in work and his flamboyant personality impress her and their friendship soon turns into love & a marriage proposal. Everything is alright but Shankar's father, a judge wants his son to complete his studies abroad. So the marriage is postponed until Shankar returns. Antony, realising the bonding between them, decides to keep himself away from the couple. He leaves everything in Calcutta & goes to Sadatpur Church in U.P. & joins as a priest. Before leaving, Shankar takes Shila to meet their old friend and Shila soon realises that she is pregnant. Shankar leaves the city & Shila writes everything about her pregnancy. In reply, Shankar suggests an abortion but Shila is determind to have the baby. She goes to Sadatpur seeking Antony's help. Antony makes all the arrangements and Shila gives birth to her child. Antony takes the child, brings him up with care and affection, and this issue remains a secret to everyone. Shila returns to Calcutta with an empty hand. As per commitment, Shankar returns after completing his studies and marries her. On the first night of their marriage Shankar comes to know about the child whom she has given birth to three years ago. He goes mad at her and refuses to accept him as his son. Shila writes a letter to Sadatpur wanting to see the child but Antony asks her not to come until she can accept him as her own child. Shila remains silent keeping the pain inside. 20 years later, Shila is the headmistress in her school. One day she decides to visit Sadatpur to meet Father Antony. But Antony is not there. He has left for Sarnath the day before. Shila rushes to Sarnath and there, she meets an 18 year old boy Rahul, who is a popular guide in this religious place. Rahul calls her 'Mother' & approaches to guide her throughout the place. Shila is surprised with this teenager's knowledge and his nature. She develops a strange affection towards this boy. A few days later, Shila finds a taxi in front of her house. Antony gets down from the car. She prays to Antony for her child, but Antony is steadfast. He reminds her about the promise she had made. Finally, the truth is revealed to her that Rahul the guide of Sarnath is her own child. Shila tells Antony that she has decided to leave everything - her family, reputation for Rahul. She rushes to Sarnath, meets Rahul again and tells him the truth about his mother. Rahul doesn't accept her. She is just a tourist to him. Shila apologises for the past, convinces him that she has left everything for him. Rahul asks his mother why he has been deprived for so many years. Shila commits not to leave him again. Rahul comes to his mother's arms.
