Mounaguru is a Tamil film which stars Arulnidhi,Iniya and Uma Riyaz Khan. The music and background score is by Thaman.
The basic premise of Mounaguru revolves around a college student who is stuck in a crisis due to unfortunate situations in his life.
The film starts with a college student Karunakaran who leads a daily easy going life.A song is picturised about him at the start of the film(but thankfully its very short).
Karunakaran is characterized as a very brilliant student but one who is short-tempered and gets into fights.Though his side of the story is mostly correct, his mother dislikes him for his behaviour.
A minor issue in a telephone booth leads to him being expelled from his college in Madurai. His elder helps him by admitting to a college in Chennai.
Meanwhile, there is another story where three unethical police officers get entangled in an incident. While they are on a highway close to Chennai,a car at high speed crashes at a wall. The policeman, while examining the car find a big bag having croat the trunk. The driver of the car is fatally injured and unconscious.Assuming him to be dead, the three policeman(an Inspector and two Sub-Inspector)decide to share the money among themselves.Suddenly, the driver wakes up but is killed by the Inspector!!A gruesome murder and robbery committed in a single day with no evidence!!
The Inspector later talks about this incident to his co-conspirators via phone in his house. But unfortunately, his wife is another unethical women who has video-camera in the room. The policeman and his confessions are recorded in a video camera. She tries to sell this to some persons for black-mailing.But unfortunately, the deal goes off as they feel it is too complex.
A college student steals the video camera and it lands in Karunakaran's room.In a sudden turn of events,Karuna who knows nothing about this is lead to an forest where he is about to be killed by the three policeman.
The policeman cause a lot of problems in his life framing him as a mental patient. How he gets out of this complex situation and finds out the truth is the remaining story!!Uma Riyaz as the investigating police office perfectly suits the role. She investigates the car accident and slowly unravels the mystery.
1.Less songs(only 3).
2.Focussed narration and gripping screenplay.
3.Performances of Arulnidhi,Iniya and Uma Riyaz Khan. But Arul has to improve on his monotonous voice and diction.
4.A different story.
6.Some realistic moments.
1.Logic takes a beating at some points. For example,a mentally unstable guy helps Karunakaran escape from the mental hospital. The unstable guy acts and talks in a sensible manner which makes audience question:Is he truly insane?
Also a cliched moment when the bullet gets stuck while pulling the trigger just when the hero is on the firing line.It is a bit unbelievable!!
2.Slow pace in the first half.
3.Visuals are too bright(some whitish) at some places which could have been avoided.
Also screen flashes in between intermittently, which irked me slightly!!
4.The suspense element just fades out a bit towards the end.The thrill element is a bit low in this film which promised a high-voltage
Overall, the film would have been a classic equivalent to a Hollywood thriller had the director paid attention to these minor but significant flaws.
