Moushmi Chatterjee was born in a conservative Bengali family. Her father was in Army. When she was 19, she was married off too Hemant Kumar’s son. It was only after marriage that Moushmi Chatterjee thought of doing films.
Moushmi Chatterjeee’s debut was a Bengali film Balika Badhu (1967). Her next film was Parineeta (1969), where she played the protagonist Lolita with finesse.
Moushmi’s first hindi film was Anurag (1972) directed by Moushmi Chatterjee, where she played a blind girl. The film was a success, and Moushmi won herself many rave reviews for a sensitice portrayal. Anuraag made Moushmi get noticed by all the big film makers of the country.
Ever since, Moushmi Chatterjee has been one of the busiest actresses. She did a lot many films in the 70s against the biggest of stars. Her most important films were Roti Kapda aur Makaan (1974), Swarg Narak (1978) and Manzil (1979). In the 80s, Moushmi Chatterjee started doing character roles, many of them even being action films where she had no role to speak of. Her only film where her role was author backed was Angoor (1982). Her other successful films were Justice Chawdhry (1983), Ghar Ek Mandir (1984), Watan ke Rakhwale (1987) and Ghayal (1990) Moushmi continued to do character roles and did them in plenty. By the end of 90s, Moushmi chatterjee was a well established on-screen mother with films like Kareeb (1998), Doli Sajaa Ke Rakhna (1998) and Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999). Off late, Moushmi chatterjee was last seen in films like Bollywood Hollywood (2002), Hum Kaun Hai (2004) and Zindaggi Rocks (2006)

Moushmi Chaterjee was nominated for Best actress award in 1972 for her very first hindi film, Anuraag.
She is married to film producer and famous playback singer Hemant Kumar’s son Jayanta Mukherjee with two daughters Payal and Megha. Her younger daughter Megha was launched in Bengali films by Moushmi’s mentor Tarun Majumdar, and Moushmi did a part in that film.
