In the village called Vilaspur in the year 1996 the panchayat decides to kill a widow named Ganga, aged 22 and her mother Tara Devi, blaming them of loose character. The panchayat members cover up the killings with the help of M.L.A Durga Pandey(Harish Patel). Ketaki(Madhuri Dixit) is married to Vinay Singh (Ayub Khan) and comes to Vilaspur. A rich contractor named Kirpat Singh(Mohan Joshi) makes Vinay Singh helpless and lures him into his trap and starts making money by using stones from his property. Ketaki is an intelligent woman who helps her husband to come out of this mess and start leading a respectable life. Ketaki's brother-in-law, Abhay Singh (Mohan Agashe) becomes the leader of the priests leaving his wife Chandravati (Shabana Azmi) all alone, who is childless. Kirpat Singh is upset when Vinay Singh starts prospering with Ketaki's advice and is thus killed in a bomb blast. Ketaki decides to face the injustice meted out to women by the village panchayat and unites all the women in the village to fight for injustice and when the men gather to kill Ketaki and Chandravati all the village women rise to their help and save Ketaki and Chandravati. Ketaki kills Kirpat Singh and ends the injustice done to them . Mrityudand is a story of how women across villages face injustice every day in every walk of life and many innocent women are killed by panchayat decisions stating them to be of loose character.
