Mukesh (real name Mukesh Chand Mathur) was born on July 22, 1923 in Punjab. He was the sixth child to his parents. After completing high school, Mukesh left school and started working for Delhi Dept. Mukesh was noticed by Motilal at his sister’s wedding where he was singing. Motilal was so impressed by his voice and singing ability that he took Mukesh to Bombay. Not only did Motilal arrange a place for Mukesh to stay, but also music lessons for Mukesh to hone his skills.
Mukesh’s first song was “Dil Hi Bujha Hua To” from Nirdosh (1941), where He also acted in. Mukesh’s first popular song was “Dil Jalta Hai to Jalne De” from Pehli Nazar (1945), which was a huge hit. In this song, Mukesh tried to imitate his idol K. L. Saigal, and he did it so well that most of the listeners thought it was Saigal himself. After Dil Jalta hai, Mukesh did not look back.
Mukesh soon established himself as a successful playback singer. He particularly sang many songs for actor-director Raj Kapoor and became his unofficial voice on screen. He sang many popular and memorable songs for Raj kapoor in the 50s like like ‘Awara Hoon’ (Awara), ‘Mera Joota Hai Japani’ (Shri 420), ‘Kisi ki muskurahton’ (Anari), ‘Dost Dost na Raha’ (Sangam) and ‘Jeena Yahaan Marna Yahaan’ (Mera Naam Joker). Mukesh also sang many other popular songs like ‘Zindagi Khwab Hai’ (Jagte Raho), ‘Suhana Safar’ (Madhumati)
In the late 60s and 70s, Mukesh slid due to rising popularity of Kishore Kumar. Still Mukesh came up with eternal gems like ‘Kahin Door Jab Din (Anand), ‘Kabhi Kabhie Mere Dil Mein’ (Kabhie Kabhie) and ‘Chanchal Sheetal Nirmal’ (Satyam Shivam Sundaram). On July 27, 1976 Mukesh died of Heart-attack in Michigan, U.S.A.
Mukesh won 4 Filmfare awards – Sab kuch seekha hamne – Anari in 1959 Sabse bada Nadan – Pehchan in 1970 Jai bolo beimaan ki – Beimaan in 1972’ Kabhi kabhie mere dil mein – Kabhi kabhie in 1976 He also won a National Award in 1974 for Kayi baar Yun hi dekha Hai (Rajnigandha).
