This is the story of Deva (Mithun Chakraborty), who is from a low caste poor family. His friend Ajay (Atul Agnihotri) is from a well-to-do Brahmin family. Seeing his affection towards Deva, Ajays sends him to London where he becomes a writer and writes the book titled "Deva". He then returns with journalist Sonali (Sonali Bendre) to the village of Bharatpur to meet his old friend Deva. He wants to provide fresh drinking water to the villagers. At this time many villagers die because of the consumption of unclean water. Seeing this, Deva kills Ajay's uncle Jagdamba who Deva suspects as having a responsibility in this tragedy owing to his political influence. Deva is then seen as an outsider and attacked by the mobs. To escape from the situation, he boards a ship which takes him to Malaysia. In Kualalampur, he vists and joins the gang of Talki and meets Sonia. While in Malaysia, he becomes a rival gangster and drug peddler. Ajay and Sonali arrive in Malasia in an attempt to get Deva back to India and give him justice. Deva finishes the gang of Talki and when the pregnant Sonia is shot dead, he loses all sanity and gets killed in the process. Before dying he hands over the baby to Sonali. Ajay finally succeeds in providing fresh drinking water to the village.
