The protagonist Ramu comes to Calcutta with his family and takes shelter in a middle-class area. He is unemployed and lives with his parents and two siblings. Ramu is a dreamer and he dreams to overcome his present circumstances. His father is also a dreamer who dreams about winning a lottery. He has a sister who is of marriageable age but keeps getting rejected. She feels insulted and protests against this humiliation. They live in a rented house, but can't pay the landlord. Ramu lives with the hope that he will get a job soon and everything will be alright. He is in love with Uma. Uma belongs to a middle-class family. Ramu promises to settle down matrimonially once he gets a job. He goes for interviews, but can’t manage to get a job. In the meanwhile, a brilliant chemist comes to their house and takes shelter as a paying guest. This man, Sages, is also unemployed. Time goes on. Ramu’s father dies. He still hasn't got a job. They decide to move to a slum. Sages confesses his love for Sita. He decides to leave them, as he is now a burden to them, but Ramu is still a dreamer. All of them start their new journey together.
